Honolulu Magazine Department Pages

A few standout department pages that highlight collaboration, concept development, and visual storytelling:

Calabash Opener – Daniel Anthony pounding taro into traditional pa‘i ‘ai at Lyon Arboretum. Photographed by Monte Costa.

Dining – A roundup of Oʻahu’s top hot pot spots, captured in rich detail by Olivier Koning.

The Burden of the Beasts – Commissioned a conceptual illustration by Victo Ngai to bring a playful, Asian-inspired style to this story on the relocation of wild donkeys to a safe sanctuary.

A Lotta Gelato – Two local gelato shops go head-to-head in a flavorful battle for the top spot in town.

Afterthoughts: Apocalypse Soon – Mike Keany’s existential take on the end of the world. I commissioned illustrator Daniel Fishel, whose style perfectly matched the tone. I also suggested local visual cues—like referencing The Bus—to ground the piece in Hawai‘i.
